The Nike 'Swoosh' of a Recovery?

The Nike 'Swoosh' of a Recovery?

Tax Free shopping goes hand-in-hand with the Travel & Tourism industry. Any recovery in tourism will spark a return of shoppers to stores.

The spread of the COVID-19 virus has had a damaging impact on the global airlines industry as governments throughout the western world locked-down their markets in a bid to stop the further spread of the virus. IATA estimated that the impact of the pandemic could cost the industry as much as $314bn[1] a number subject to upward revision.

When the reality of the virus hit, many governments and businesses looked at the economic effects of previous outbreaks such as MERS and SARS for a view of what recovery might look like.

The current thinking is that recovery will look more like the Nike tick logo 'swoosh'

Marho Bateren, Market Intelligence Analyst, Planet

Many initially banked on recovery looking like a V or a U shape in terms of decline and then upturn; with the downturn length similar to the upturn.

However, the current thinking is that recovery will look more like the Nike tick logo 'swoosh'; suggesting a much longer recovery period versus the downturn.

Economic recovery and consumer confidence

What seems to be driving this slower recovery is the sheer amount of uncertainty that this pandemic has driven. Furthermore, economists, analysts and industry spectators have a myriad of views as to the confidence that consumers have about the future.

A recent piece by Accenture[2] highlighted that consumers are more fearful of the economic impact of COVID-19 than for their health. Whilst 64% said they feared for their own health, 88% were worried about the impact that the virus would have on the economy.

According to the Boston Consulting Group’s Covid-19 Consumer Sentiment Survey[3] there has been a continued decline across the UK, Italy, US, France and Canada in the number of consumers who believe that the worst of the coronavirus still lies ahead.

Despite this positive turn in sentiment, most consumers believe not only are their lives different today than they were Pre Covid-19, but also that the pandemic has changed how they will live their lives tomorrow and forever. It is perhaps these behavioural shift in consumer sentiment that may prolong a recovery.
