The status quo has never been questioned as much as now. We shouldn’t miss this opportunity to help mitigate those hurdles that can hinder career development and create a more level playing field.

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

 

At Planet, one of our core values is we celebrate differences. Differences and diversity can take many forms from gender, age, ethnicity, disability, education and experiences among many others. Research show that organisations with a strong diversity focus outperform others and benefit from employees feeling valued, a greater sense of belonging and increased engagement.

 

We have strong foundations already in place, and a thriving culture operating in over 70 markets across five continents. Women account for 46% of our global workforce.  

 

Women at Planet

 

This year we’re launching Women at Planet. A key priority of this initiative is to address how we attract and develop diverse talent and build a stronger pipeline of female leaders. We have identified a key area for diversity is within our management layer and above.

 

Working with our female leaders, I’m personally excited to champion this initiative and help drive change. I can draw on my personal experience within my family and the challenges faced when two parents are trying to balance demanding roles whilst raising young children. Flexibility is key to getting the right balance professionally and personally. Without this, it can often be women who deprioritise their careers and it can be a real challenge for them to continue the pace of development of their male peers when returning to work part or full time. We are committed to supporting our female colleagues and mitigating specific hurdles some may face during their career journey.

McKinsey refer to a ‘broken rung’ within the first steps in to management as one of the key reasons organisations are failing to bring women through to senior leadership. There can be many causes why organisations are failing. What is clear is that we should all be doing more to look at tangible actions that can be implemented to drive change.

 

At Planet, mentoring, return to work coaching, our ‘empowerment series’ and diversity and inclusion training will support our people and efforts to accelerate change.

 

#ChooseToChallenge 

 

The status quo has never been questioned as much as now and while reassessing ways of working, we shouldn’t miss this opportunity to #ChooseToChallenge, help mitigate those hurdles that can hinder career development and create a more level playing field. 

 

Change doesn’t happen overnight, all leaders have the responsibility to drive this change. We can feel empowered to challenge our own thinking and each other. As a parent of a young son and daughter, I hope that gender equality will be a given when they start their careers, offering everyone equal opportunity.

 

This change has to start with us, from challenge comes change.
