This prime location, coupled with Folli Follie’s global reputation as an international fashion house, makes the store a desirable destination for shoppers.

Capitalising on Chinese shoppers’ purchasing power

 

Folli Follie welcomes thousands of shoppers through its doors each day. In 2019 almost 60% of Folli Follie’s turnover in its three main stores in Greece was driven by Tax Free sales to global visitors.

 

Chinese shoppers are the largest international source market for Folli Follie, which is unsurprising considering the targeted effort Greece has invested in attracting Chinese tourists in recent years.


According to figures from the Greek-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and official data from the consular authorities in China, Chinese arrivals in Greece in 2017 reached 170,000-180,000 – an increase of 10-15% compared with 2016.[1]  At the end of 2018, China was marked as one of the country’s fastest-growing tourist markets and Greece was predicted to welcome an additional 200,000 tourists over the course of 2019.[2]

 

Folli Follie saw this as an opportunity to enhance its offering to an increasingly international customer base, and has spent many years cultivating relationships with tourist groups and guides, encouraging them to visit the store during their trips to the city.

Shopping remains a key incentive for Chinese tourists travelling abroad. McKinsey predicts that by 2025, 7.6 million Chinese households will represent 380 billion euros in global luxury sales. To capture their share of this expenditure, Folli Follie partnered with Planet in 2014 to help on-the-floor retail staff deliver exceptional customer experiences for their international customers.

 

Through cultural training Planet was able to further educate the staff on the nuances of different shopper demographics, arming them with practical tips and advice to communicate effectively, and ultimately drive increased sales.

 

Providing high-quality customer service is key to creating a positive shopper experience, but so is convenience and efficiency. For this reason, Folli Follie also engaged with Planet to implement Tax Free sales services into their offering. Informing customers of the money they can save through Tax Free services is one of the simplest ways to build a rapport with a customer, and often results in them spending more in store. With the help of Planet, Folli Follie was able to facilitate a pre-airport VAT refund system, where shoppers can get their VAT forms stamped in store, then validated and refunded at a reclaim location in the city centre.

 

Rather than having to wait to do this at an airport, Folli Follie customers benefit from claiming VAT back just minutes after their purchase. Last year saw Tax Free sales to China and USA – Greece’s leading source markets – rise by 47% and
46% respectively. This impressive growth speaks to the opportunity that international shoppers provide, and the increased attractiveness of Greece as one of Europe’s major shopping destinations.
