International payment service provider, Planet, has partnered with Tencent to launch WeChat instant refund capabilities at airports throughout Europe and the United Arab Emirates via the WeChat mini-program. We Tax Refund allows international shoppers to claim back sales tax for their shopping whilst abroad.
 
The service has been launched in the UAE’s airports (Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah), as well as the busiest airports in Italy (Rome, Venice and Milan) and Germany (Frankfurt). The European launch coincides with dedicated Golden Week promotions (1st – 7th October) for this peak Chinese travel period. Shoppers will be able to receive their tax refund instantly in their WeChat wallet through the innovative mini-program We Tax Refund (or 腾讯退税通).  
 
With the implementation of We Tax Refund on WeChat, the UAE further enhances their overall experience, serving as one of the must-see holiday destinations by Chinese tourists.
 
Shoppers are notified through WeChat’s messaging functionality that their tax refund has been received. Refunds are received instantly at the airport for the shopper in their local currency, RMB. This can be spent at select merchants in the airport where WeChat Pay is accepted, or back in China through the WeChat wallet. 
 
International shoppers will be able to benefit from the convenience of receiving refunds through a preferred payment method in WeChat, as well as the speed and security of mobile payments.
 
Planet and We Tax Refund will also be launching a series of marketing initiatives to promote WeChat instant refund for shoppers during the peak season of Golden Week. These include a ‘red packet’ campaign to offer users the chance to get a red packet through WeChat, where shoppers could receive up to an additional 88 RMB refund when receiving their tax back through WeChat wallet.
