May saw a strong bounce back for consumer retail spending with the rate of recovery reaching its highest point since the start of the pandemic, when compared to sales in May 2019.
Portugal continues to be the strongest performing major destination market with sales in May now 5% above pre-pandemic levels. US and UK consumers are driving the recover across Europe; sales to US consumers posted a very healthy increase of 36% compared to 2019.
Looking at hospitality, May’s figures continue to paint a picture of recovery in hotel payments, with revenues now just 9% below 2019. Southern Europe shone with Italian hotel revenues exceeding pre-pandemic levels by 7%, while in Spain, revenues were broadly equal to 2019. Switzerland also performed well with levels now 8% higher compared to May 2019.
