France joins the ranks of destinations to see growth challenged in the first quarter

The trends in Tax Free shopping sales seen in February continued into March, as sales experienced a decline of 8% in the month, which followed the 9% decline seen in the prior month, and the 21% growth seen in the March 2017.

 

Each of the major destination markets registered a decline in sales, but again, Italy was the exception in the month and is the only major destination that has posted incremental gains in the first quarter of 2018.

 

From a source market perspective, sales to Chinese tourists increased by 13% in the month, which meant that sales to these tourists increased by 2% overall in the first quarter of 2018, and was the only major source market to register gains in the quarter.

 

The outlook for arrival numbers between April through to June suggests a modest increase of 2.4% in Non-EU arrival numbers, this does however compare, and would be incremental to, the 11.7% increase in the same three month period in the prior year.
