Brexit: How British tourists spend, and the opportunity for EU businesses

Brexit: How British tourists spend, and the opportunity for EU businesses

With the UK having left the EU, there will be new rules coming into effect from 1st January 2021.

Brits Abroad

The latest figures indicate that the number from trips from UK tourists travelling to Europe has been steadily increasing year on year over the last decade. The number of trips has gone up by a massive 47% (or 29.6 million trips) from 2009 to 2019. [1]

Until the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, this steady increase shows that UK residents have the desire for European travel, and also the disposable income in which to do so. Figures show that €68 billion was spent in total by tourists from the UK in 2019, 7% more than in 2018. [2]

Furthermore, the average spend per trip is increasing. And this increase is coming from holiday makers, with the slowest spending growth seen from business travellers.

Spending habits

Shoppers in the UK are familiar with paying for goods and services in a variety of ways, with card payments, digital wallets, cash, and bank transfer still in use across the country. However, cashless payments are now in the lead as the preferred payment method. Card payments now represent 75% of the payment methods made at the Point of Sale, one of the highest in the world [3].

Moreover, the coronavirus pandemic has accelerated cashless payments, in particular contactless. Contactless is now the recommended safe and hygienic payment method to avoid the spread of the virus, as covered in our recent article on European payment trends and Digital Transformation during Covid-19.

Within the European Hotel and Fine Dining sector, our analysis has shown that there has been a staggering 200% increase in contactless payments being made in March-August 2020, when comparing with the same 6 month period in 2019 [4].

UK shoppers are also making use of their smartphones and paying by digital and mobile wallets more and more, both in store and online. When it comes to digital and mobile wallets, 27% of all online purchases and 10% of all in-store purchases are paid in this way by UK consumers [5].

When comparing the use of mobile and digital wallets with credit card for spending across different categories, (clothing and footwear, electronics and health and beauty products), the figures show that UK spenders are happy to use digital wallets methods just as much as a standard credit card payment [6].

These trends indicate UK shoppers have an increased confidence in using digital payment methods which are convenient and safe. And that when they come to shop aboard, they will be expecting to be able to pay in their preferred methods there as well.

Travel destinations

Spain is still a very popular destination for British tourists. In 2019, 18million British visitors spent €2million per hour in Spain, with the average total spend of €995 per person.

Furthermore, the international tourist mix in Spain in 2019 shows that UK tourists make up the largest percentage, with 21.6%, ahead of the Germans, French and Scandinavians [7]. Spanish merchants clearly have an opportunity here.

The percentage spend on Retail shopping in the EU by outbound British tourists will likely increase as well, due to new price differentials for goods and the new incentive of Tax Free shopping, a key value added payments service.

EU businesses should act now

Shoppers in the UK seem comfortable paying in a variety of ways. EU merchants should be ready to welcome British tourists in 2021, and ensure they can offer multiple payment options, including high value contactless for Digital and Mobile Wallets acceptance.

Supporting Currency Conversion will give British tourists the choice to pay in pounds or the local currency, providing convenience and confidence to spend freely.

The time is now for merchants to get ahead of the curve.

Get ready to welcome the UK’s Tax Free shoppers to your stores.
