Five ways to boost hotel revenues with more Dinngggg

Five ways to boost hotel revenues with more Dinngggg

July 2021

There’s only one certainty if you’re running a hotel this summer – uncertainty.

The recovery is coming, but slowly

In May, VisitBritain forecast there would be about 11 million tourist visits to the UK in 2021, up slightly on 2020 but less than a third of the trips in 2019. Tourist spend was also predicted to be just over a fifth of that from two years ago.

Unsurprisingly, VisitBritain expects European markets to recover quicker than long haul markets, but accepts that much will depend on vaccines, restrictions, variants etc. You get the picture – uncertainty!

It's a mixed story across Europe too. Tourism levels are starting to show a moderate improvement with hotel occupancy rates, hotel searches, and travel sentiment scores all recording gains in recent months. However a lot of uncertainty remains.

As for staycations, they are bound to be popular but how that pans out is impossible to predict for sure.

Make the most of uncertainty

On the bright side, there is a lot of optimism that we are moving towards the end game.

Certainly, Governments across Europe are doing all they can to avoid further lockdowns as we head towards the summer travel and tourist season. An EU-wide digital vaccination certificate is also expected to be in place by 1 July.

The British government has gone further, promising that this lockdown is the last one (thanks to the vaccine rollout).

The good news is there will be guests to welcome. With many customers having built-up their savings during the pandemic, they will have more money to spend than ever before.

So, how can you encourage them to part with that hard earned cash when they stay with you?

We’ve put together a few tips to help you get your share of that Dinngggg payment moment.

Tip one

Wow them with your technology.

While some guests will be looking for the personal touch from hotel staff, others post-pandemic, will be happier with a contactless check-in from their mobile phone. Once they’ve done the necessary, they can receive a mobile smart key, or pick up a room key from reception or a convenient pick-up point.

Self-service kiosks are growing in popularity as travellers grow ever more comfortable with digital in the real world. The terminals can cope with check-in, check-out and payments. The more you incorporate easy, smooth digital options the more confident your guests will be to spend.

Tip two

We all like to know what we’re spending, even when we’re flush with cash.

I don’t know about you, but I always have that moment of doubt when I’m paying in a foreign currency – am I getting a good deal? Is this costing me more than I thought?

We know that guests like the option of paying in their own familiar currency so offering Currency Conversion services (DCC) will put your visitors at ease and they’re more likely to order an extra drink or two if they know how much they cost.

Tip three

Forgetting your room number (was it 513 or 531?) when you place your food order, can be embarrassing. Guests want every aspect of their stay to be easy. And that includes payments.

You can make it easy for them with tokenisation. They provide their payment details on arrival and you align them with a token, a card or even a wearable. It’s like paying on a tab without the pen and paper.

They won’t have to remember their room number, sign a bill or pull a card out of their wallet or purse. Painless and let’s face it, it’s much easier to buy another drink when the card is out of sight.

Tokens also help you identify how and where your guests are spending. This gives you rich data insights so you can personalise your marketing with targeted guest reward programmes.

Tip four

Make sure your system can handle as many different ways for guests to pay as possible.

Digital wallets are incredibly popular and not just with millennials and Gen Z. We’re all finding out how convenient it is to have everything we need on our smartphone.

Planet is integrated with all the major ways to pay – including Alipay and WeChat Pay. All this integration takes the headache out of end of day reporting and revenue tracking, as everything is automated.

Tip five

Hotels are like several businesses in one. You probably have a bar, café, restaurant, spa, shop, (even a nightclub?).

To make life easy you need a unified approach to accepting payments so it’s simple for your guests. Make sure your payments are fully integrated so you can have eyes on the whole operation and improve security at the same time.

Also, no one likes leaving their friends and family to pay a bill. So mobile android terminals are a must these days, as guests can pay where they want to – at the table, at the bar or in the lounge.

The next few months are critical for hotels with many facing a very uncertain future. Planet can't take away the uncertainty but we can make sure your payments system is ready to maximise your guests' spend and deliver you more Dinngggg.
