New international airline routes set to boost Ireland's Tax Free sales

New international airline routes set to boost Ireland's Tax Free sales

Two significant international airline “firsts” for Ireland will provide retailers in Ireland with a significant boost in terms of inbound arrivals from the world’s number two economy.

  • From June 2018, China’s Hainan Airlines will begin the first direct flights between Beijing and Dublin
  • In the same month, Cathay Pacific will also begin direct flights between Hong Kong and Dublin

29th March, 2018

China is the world's largest outbound travel market, and one of the fastest growing, with trips from China predicted to grow to 200 million a year by 2020. The Irish Times article that highlights these new direct flights provides further context for this huge opportunity to the Irish economy:

“Tourism Ireland estimates that about 70,000 Chinese visitors came to the island of Ireland last year, up from 60,000 visitors in 2016.”  According to the Dublin Airport Authority, these direct flights will have the capacity to carry approximately 175,000 inbound travelers by 2019, which represents a significant increase.

This is a particularly important announcement for retailers in Ireland. Currently, Chinese tourists are Ireland’s leading retail spenders with an average spend of €414 relative to the national average of €180.

While Chinese shopping is largely concentrated in the Dublin region, the growth in numbers and changing nature of that travel to be more independent and less ‘packaged’, is likely to see a further growth of shopping in regions beyond Dublin.

As a business founded in Ireland, and now present across 55 markets worldwide, we are a well-recognised and respected brand with Chinese tourists.

To complement our strength in working with Chinese tourists, we have hired additional Chinese speaking staff in our Dublin Airport office and have recently updated all our point of sale materials to communicate the Tax Free process more effectively.

We have also been investing in advanced Cultural Training to key Chinese-focused retailers and have updated our 60 refund locations across China, which can also refund Irish VAT refund forms to returning tourists to China.

From June, coinciding with the two new direct flight services, we will also be operating from an additional office in Terminal 1 where the Chinese flights will be departing from.

Likewise, we will be further adding to our staff levels there to ensure a high level of service in close co-operation with Customs and the DAA.
