The famed BRIC countries, accounting for 40% of the world’s population, have seen declines in tourist spend from Brazil and Russia in the last two years, and declines in Chinese tourists' spend in 2016. However, the final quarter of 2016 saw a substantial rebound in spend by these tourists, which is expected to continue into 2017. Whilst spend by Indian tourists in Europe has continued to see gains, with only 6.5% of the population estimated to currently hold a passport, coupled with the predicted economic growth and rise of the middle class, spend by Indian tourists is expected to continue to ascend to the upper echelons of top Tax Free shopping nations.
The ‘Next 11’, also referred to as the numeronym ‘N-11’, relates to newer and less established countries, consisting of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey, South Korea and Vietnam, which are predicted to form part of the next wave of emerging economies. These nationalities have experienced mixed fortunes from a Tax Free shopping perspective, but collectively saw gains of 17% and 3% in 2015 and 2016, respectively, with 2016 growth of 8%, excluding Nigerian and Egyptian tourists.
